Filters will not last forever! Generally filters have a simple task, hang out on your aquarium and pump water all day. The extent of their work is in filter changes or moving, touching and moving from the hobbyist and the impeller spinning all hours and pumping water.
Impellers are made up of straight fans affixed to a shaft that also has a magnet on it. Most pumps are now magnetic driven which reduces wear on parts and noise. The fan and magnet assembly are on an axle like rod that holds the impeller in the pump.
Broken impellers will make more noise than usual. If you are in the room when the impeller breaks you will likely hear it. If a fin on the impeller breaks it is likely the rest will break off because of debris in the pump chamber.
We also have O-rings for a lot of filters, O-ring may break or dry out if the filter is in storage. Thumb screws are easy to lose during maintenance and clips can break when replacing filter media. We have a wide variety of Hagen Filter Parts and can get ahold of most parts that match the types of filters we sell. Our inventory is always changing so if you donít see a part you need let us know and we may be able to get it even though it isnít in our online catalogue.
