Hydrometers:
Hydrometers measure the specific gravity and salinity of the water or liquid inside the instrument. It should be noted that specific gravity and salinity are not the same. Salinity is the measure of salt in water, were specific gravity is the measurement of dissolved solids and minerals in an aqueous solution.
Hydrometers should be calibrated frequently. As hydrometers are used they change their readings. To calibrate your hydrometer used distilled freshwater in it and see how close it measures to 1.000. If it is not directly on 1.000 you should add or subtract the difference from your aquarium tank readings. After each use make sure to rinse your hydrometer with freshwater. To avoid calibration and get more accurate readings we recommend using a refractometer. Although more expensive, refractometers are much more accurate that hydrometers.
Varying salinity can cause stress to your aquarium livestock. When doing water changes you should replace drained water with saltwater. If you are just topping off evaporated water you should use fresh RO/DI water from a reverse osmosis unit. Do not ever replace evaporated water with saltwater, salt does not evaporate with the water. To avoid frequent top offs and keep consistent salinity reading you should use a auto top off system or ATO.
