Aquarium Power Heads:

Power heads offer water circulation within the aquarium to provide the proper water current for live rock and corals. Corals rely on filter feeding, they filter the water that passes by them for food and nutrients. If there isn’t enough water flowing around the corals they may not receive enough food. Granted most corals held in captivity are hand fed, the water current will also help wash away detrus and left over food off of the coral.

Water flow also helps to make sure waste is suspended in the water so that it can be filtered out by the filtration system. Internal tank flow also helps live rock efficiently filter the water by ensuring there is no stagnant water.

Aquarium power head pumps can also lift water short distances if designed to do such, like the Maxi Jet pumps.
