Direct Aquarium is proud to offer numerous lines of leading protein skimmers.
Protein skimmers are a critical part to the maintenance of your reef or saltwater tank. Too much protein in the water means that ammonia is building up, which can kill the valuable fish and corals in your aquarium.
Protein skimmers work by pumping water from the tank into a reaction chamber. Once in the reaction chamber, a stream of air bubbles is forced into a column of water. As the bubbles work their way through the water, protein molecules stick to them. Then, as the bubbles rise, the protein rises with the bubbles, creating a slurry of protein filled floating foam that is collected by the skimmer.
Several different configurations of protein skimmers are generally offered. Hang-on units sit on the back of the aquarium and use a waterfall spout to return the water back to the tank. In-sump filter systems simply sit right inside your existing sump or next to it.
Originally, the design of protein skimmers used an airstone to inject the bubbles that collect the protein, but new innovations in protein skimmers utilize a high pressure water pump as an injector. Such methods include the use of a Venturi valve or a Needle Wheel/Turbo style impeller. These new designs allow for better contact time between the air bubbles and the protein, allowing for a more efficient collection of excess protein in your tank.
