Refractometers:
The best way to measure salinity in aquarium water is to use a aquarium refractometer. Refractometers also measure specific gravity. A refractometer analyzes the water placed on the lens and measures how the light passes through it. Different substances and liquids will bend light differently when it passes through. A refractometer measures how the light passes through and gives a very accurate reading of the salinity and specific gravity.
Milwaukee Instruments offers a precision optical instrument made for measuring concentrations of substances in water like solutions. Milwaukee refractometers are used by placing a drop of the water sample on the prism and looking through the viewing hole to read the scale.
Hydrometers are a fairly accurate way to measure aquarium water salinity but refractometers are much more accurate. Although more expensive, refractometers are worth the money because of their accuracy. Test your hydrometer by using it with distilled freshwater. Distilled freshwater should measure 1.000 after correcting temperature on your hydrometer
