Refugiums:
Refugiums are a great place to house important plants that can help keep water parameters superb. Refugiums are a separate tank or enclosure that houses delicate plants or animals that help support the main tank. The refugium is still connected to the main tank via pipes, water pumps, and screens to prevent other inhabitants from getting in or out. The refugium allows an area for filtration plants/animals to thrive while staying away from the main tank predators. One way to use a refugium is to grow algae in the refugium to combat algae inside the display tank. The algae in the refugium will use the nutrients from the water starving any algae in the main tank and will be out of site and help filter the water as well.
Our hang on back aquarium refugiums offer an easy setup for the beginning aquarist. Some refugiums contain filter components like mechanical, chemical and biological filtration. These are a great way to keep your water clean without have to purchase an external filter. Some refugiums have a separate section to house heaters and other equipment not pleasurable to the eye in the main tank. These refugiums are called sump refugiums.
We reccomend using a refugium substrate such as Walt Smith's Fiji Refugium Mud or Brightwell Aquatics KoraLagoon Refugium Substrate. Refugium substrates will help plants take quick home to your refugium and help the filtration process by providing a great home for micro organisms.
