Another necessity in a good aquarium setup is a water thermometer. Different species of fish require different temperatures, this means you must always keep an accurate reading of your aquarium water temperature. This can be done with a couple different thermometers.
Thermometers come as simple as the More Digital Thermometer which sticks to the outside of your aquarium and measures the aquarium glass temperature. A more accurate way to measure your tanks water temp is using More’s Aquarium Thermometer which measures the temperature from inside the water and has a suction cup to prevent thermometer loss, if the thermometer looses suction it will float. Digital LCD thermometers are the highest quality of thermometers. American Marine has created a wireless pinpoint style thermometer. This thermometer allows remote location of the digital readout display.
Aquarium temperature must be controlled by a heater. In most cases your house will be under to temperature of your tank so you can use an aquarium heater and only that. If your house becomes warmer than your aquarium you may need to use a fan or a chiller to keep the temperature under control. When adding more pumps, power heads, and other equipment to your tank or sump they will add heat to the water as well, possibly requiring the use of an aquarium chiller.
