Water pumps are used frequently in marine and reef aquariums. Aquarium filtration is heavily reliant on the use of pumps. Most marine aquariums use a sump and/or refugium and hide it under the main display tank or in another room. These two tanks work together and must be connected via tubing and plumbing and the water is moved by a water pump.
Aquarium water pumps must be chosen wisely. The farther vertical you are pumping the water the fewer gallons per hour your pump can produce. Aquarium pump strength is measured in GPH or gallons per hour. This is a measurement of how much water the pump could move from the input on the pump to the output of the pump. When you use your pump to move water from the bottom of your aquarium stand to the top, over and into the tank you may be pumping water up to 4 feet or more. In this case your pump not only has to move the initial water but it also has to have enough power to push the 4 foot of water on top of it through the plumbing, the is referred to as pump head loss.
