Aquarium Light Bulbs:
Aquarium Light bulbs are one of the most important pieces of equipment next to filtration for your corals and light dependent animals. Light Bulbs come in different types, wattages and colors. Light bulbs need to be replaced when they no longer light up, or stay light for the intended amount of time. Different types of bulbs have different end life behaviors, for more specific details click on the category above that applies to your bulbs type.
Tube Fluorescents are the most common style of bulbs and are identified by being a long skinny tube shaped piece of glass with two metal prongs at each end. These lamps are similar to lights found in large warehouse like stores or shops. Tube Fluorescent lamps are labeled by their diameter. We carry several different type of Tube Fluorescents including Fluorescent T5, Fluorescent T8 and Fluorescent T12. Make sure when replacing your tube fluorescents the new lamp matches the old lamps wattage AND length. Often times you can ensure the lamp is the same length if it has the same wattage because each wattage is paired to a specific length and output of fluorescent lamp.
Metal Halide Lamps are the most powerful in the hobby. These lamps range from 70 watts to 40 0 watts and are all the same size. We a lot of different metal halide bulbs including HQI, Double Ended, Single Ended and also Mogul Based Bulbs. Metal Halides are available in different colors as well and are often measured by their Kelvin (K) rating.
Compact Fluorescent lamps are a new improved style of fluorescent lamp. These lamps are usually described as a tube fluorescent bent in half and only have one side that plugs into the socket. Compact fluorescents are also referred to as power compact lights and will only have connecting pins on one side. Compact Fluorescent lamps are never measure by length (unless for confirmation) and can always be found by their wattage. Be sure when you replace your compact fluorescent lamps that you get the same wattage and pin type. Pin types are either square pins or straight pins and refer to the arrangement of pins at one end of the bulb.
